We teach Reading and Language Arts through a program called The Daily 5.
The Daily Five is a way of structuring reading and writing so every student is independently engaged in meaningful activities. These research based tasks are ones that will have the biggest impact on student reading and writing achievement, as well as help foster children who love to read and write.
Students receive explicit whole group instruction known as a "mini lesson" and then are given independent practice time to read and write independently while teachers provide focused, intense instruction to individual and small groups of students.
The 5 Components of the Daily 5 are:
Read to Self
Work on Writing
Read to Someone
Listen to Reading
Work on Words
Listening Link
It is important that children HEAR good reading while they are developing their reading skills. This link is a website where children can do just that -- read and listen. We use this link in class as part of the Daily 5 program.
